As the Calgary Stampede celebrates its 113th year in 2025, this iconic annual festival continues to serve as a vibrant gathering point for the Calgary community. Casa Mexico proudly highlights the significant and long-standing presence of Mexican culture at this celebrated event. Indeed, Mexican cultural influence and participation have been interwoven with the fabric of the Calgary Stampede since its inaugural official event in 1912. This early integration stems from Mexico's rich rodeo traditions, which led to the invitation of skilled Mexican cowboys, contributing directly to the Stampede's burgeoning success. This historical collaboration underscores a deeply rooted partnership between Mexico and Calgary, a relationship poised for continued growth and enrichment.
In recent years, Mexican culture has been showcased through diverse initiatives at the Stampede. The vibrant Mexican float, with the dedicated support of the Mexican community, aims to present the finest aspects of Mexican heritage to Calgary. With the float, spectators can anticipate traditional dances, authentic music, distinctive attire, and demonstrations of charreada (Mexican rodeo). This has won Mexico the “Best Cultural Entry” on multiple entries. The Calgary Stampede Parade further serves as a prominent avenue for demonstrating the city's multicultural vibrancy, with Mexico consistently making a strong impression. Moreover, Casa Mexico has previously hosted live mariachi performances for the enjoyment of Calgary residents such as the “Mexican Stampede Night” in 2012, or “An Evening Under the Stars” in 2021. Additionally in 2023, Casa Mexico notably co-sponsored the Arts & Culture Stampede Pancake Palooza, providing a platform for local artists and entrepreneurs to connect with the community and share their talents. Lastly, Casa Mexico has previously established a valuable partnership with the Latino Folkloric Society, who host their annual Mexifest event during the Stampede, featuring various facets of Mexican culture. Such events exemplify the spirit of cross-cultural celebration that the Stampede fosters. These immersive experiences are instrumental in strengthening the bonds between the Calgary and Mexican communities, fostering mutual understanding and engagement.
We are currently in the middle of the 2025 Calgary Stampede, running from July 4th to 13th, and Mexico's presence is already being felt. Hopefully, you experienced the vibrant Mexican float parade and the Pancake Palooza at cSPACE Marda Loop that Casa Mexico partook in. To fully immerse yourself in Mexican culture during the remaining days of the Stampede, you can explore the numerous vendors offering delectable Mexican cuisines throughout the Stampede grounds.
