About the event

Casa Mexico and the Alliance Francaise invite you to our Galette des Rois and Rosca de Yeyes 2023.

Rosca de Reyes is a Mexican tradition to honoured the Three Wise Men, or the Three Kings, or, Reyes Magos, that came to offer gifts to the baby Jesus.

During Día de Los Reyes, Mexicans serve Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake. The Rosca de Reyes has an oval shape to symbolize a crown and has a small doll inside, which represents baby Jesus. The doll figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Traditionally, Roscas are adorned with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the many jewels that a crown would have. The person who gets the slice with the doll must host a party on Día de la Candelaria on February 2.

 Who are “los reyes magos”?

According to Christian tradition, three wise men came to visit the newborn baby Jesus shortly after his birth. Their names were Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar, and they came with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The Three Wise Men have been honored in various European countries since the Middle Ages. When the tradition of Santa Claus bringing gifts to children on Christmas Day became popular in some countries centuries ago, Spain followed suit, but used los reyes magos as the gift-bringers instead.
